This Cookie Policy explains how AskCrates ("we," "our," or "us") uses cookies and similar browser storage on our website and in our app. We use the cookies and storage that are necessary to run the Services, plus one optional setting on our website (remembering your light or dark mode) that you can accept or decline in the cookie banner. We do not use analytics, advertising, or other tracking cookies.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device (computer, smartphone, tablet) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work, for example to keep you signed in or to remember your language.
2. Cookies We Set
All of these are first-party cookies that are necessary for the Services to work. They cannot be switched off individually.

Institute accounts, where available, use the same kind of sign-in cookies under the name askcrates_inst.*.
3. Local Storage
In addition to cookies, we store a few small values in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are not sent to us with every request:
- askcrates:family-code: remembers the family code on a child's device, so the child only has to enter their PIN next time
- askcrates:dictation-hint-dismissed: remembers that you closed the tip about using your keyboard's microphone
- askcrates:consent: remembers your choice in the cookie banner (necessary; kept for up to one year, then we ask again)
- askcrates:theme: remembers whether you chose the light or the dark version of our website (optional; only stored if you accept "Preferences" in the cookie banner)
4. Cookies from Service Providers
Two service providers may set their own cookies or browser storage where this is needed for security or payment:
- Cloudflare: our website and app are delivered through Cloudflare, which may set security cookies (for example __cf_bm or cf_clearance) to tell people from bots and to protect against attacks. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
- Paddle: when the person who manages billing opens the page that starts the trial or the Settings page to start the trial, pay, or manage a subscription, Paddle's checkout is loaded and may set cookies or browser storage to process the payment and prevent fraud. See the Paddle Privacy Policy.
Our fonts are served from our own servers; visiting AskCrates does not send a request to a font provider.
5. What We Do Not Use
- No analytics cookies (for example Google Analytics)
- No advertising or marketing cookies
- No social media or other third-party tracking pixels
We measure how the Services are used with our own server-side records, without cookies; see our Privacy Policy. If we ever introduce non-essential cookies, we will update this policy and ask for your consent first.
6. Your Choices
You can delete or block cookies and local storage through your browser settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Preferences → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions
If you block or delete the cookies listed above, you will be signed out, and your language choice and the family code on a child's device will not be remembered. Because we set no analytics or marketing cookies, a "Do Not Track" signal does not change what is stored. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with "Cookie settings" in the footer of our website; declining deletes the stored theme choice.
7. GDPR and ePrivacy
For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland: the cookies and local storage in sections 2 and 3, except the one marked optional, are strictly necessary to provide a service you have asked for, so they do not require consent under the ePrivacy rules. The only optional storage is the "Preferences" category (remembering your light or dark mode); we store it only if you accept it, your consent is freely given and as easy to withdraw as to give, and the website works the same if you decline. You have the right to be informed about all of this, which is the purpose of this policy, and the data protection rights described in our Privacy Policy.
8. CCPA and US Privacy Laws
For California residents, under the CCPA:
- We do not sell or share your personal information
- You can request disclosure or deletion of your data
9. Children
Child accounts use the same necessary cookies and local storage as every other account. We do not track children across websites and do not use children's data for advertising.
10. Updates to This Cookie Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top and, for significant changes, notify you by email where appropriate.
